The Tyndall effect is named after the Irish Physicist, John Tyndall (1820-1893), who first described the feature. “The phenomenon in which light is scattered by particles of matter in its path. It enables a beam of light to become visible by illuminating dust particles, etc.” However in aesthetic medicine it is used to describe the bluish appearance that may be seen if a hyaluronic acid filler has been injected too superficially into the skin. This article produced for the Aesthetic Complications Expert Group by Dr Martyn King outlines what it is, how to avoid it and how to treat it.
